O Bargain of Bargains

I come from a close-knit family of bargain hunters..well, the females in our family are. So when it came to buying these super duper shoes at a super duper bargain price, I just had to share, especially as I know my lovely family read this blog...

So here's my bargain...

Yep, you read right, $7.50. I know...fantastic bargain huh?

And this was the first of fifteen flower granny squares to be made up, for a bubby blanket. I've got 3 complete, and 3 in progress at different stages. Have also added in a little bit of musky pink to the mix for some contrast..

Loving Levi

is easy. Just look at this cuteness...

Levi is now 4 months and here's a few things about him...
* He has more than doubled his birth weight, now weighing 7.2kgs
* He is still waking twice at night for feeds (am working on this!)
* He loves playing on the floor with his toy mobile
* He snuggles fleecy blankets when he's tired
* He loves to chat
* He had rice cereal for the first time yesterday, after recommendations from the MHN, and loved it.
* He still has all his hair, and he has a chin dimple like me!
* Everyone is still completely besotted by him, even when he's grumpy :-P

Rhubarb, Rhubarb, Rhubarb

I have fond memories of rhubarb from my childhood (mainly apple & rhubarb pie or crumble), but hadn't eaten it in a very long time. So when I saw this recipe for 'Rhubarb & Orange Upside-down Cake' in the current issue of Real Living I thought....why not give it a go?

Verdict : Yum!

Snuggly Scarves

Scarves are definitely an essential item in any winter wardrobe..well, in my mind anyhow.

Over the last month, I rustled up a couple of scarves for loved ones and here they are....

A knitted, super cosy grey scarf for Rohan...a simple rib design but manly :-P

And a crocheted skinny stripe scarf for my dear friend Cass...

I have another skinny stripe scarf on my hook at the moment, but instead of the teal shades, I'm using two shades of red..not sure who this one's for yet either ...

Cute Little Handbag

A few weeks ago, I won this adorable fabric in a fat quarter piece from the Kelani blog - yay for me! It's called 'Retro Bambi in Red on Peach'.

And on Friday night, I decided to make a little handbag from it, using a Simplicity pattern # 4650. By Saturday night it was finished, and it didn't turn out too bad at all :-P

Lined in an off-white and black damask-y flower print..

Finished with a magnetic snap clip...

and some top-stitching..

I had fun making it, and have another one or two planned in my head. Next project though : Amy Butler's Zinnia Cushion in the 24" design - should be a challenge and a half!

Cupcake Creations

Just a short and sweet post about a couple of the cupcake party's smaller details, but to start with something fun, and a little out there, here was Alannah's cupcake creation...

Hmm...I think it took her four sittings over two days to finish eating this..he he :-P

And here's a close up of the apron I made her..my design

And lastly, the left-over undecorated cupcakes got dunked in a chocolate cream icing, and topped with a flower (store bought but so cute!).

I picked up an awesome baking tin which allows you to cook the cupcakes in two halves, which you then paste together with a sticky icing mix, but it gives you the spirally top which is just too cute.

Will be back very soon with a sewing post.

A Family Favourite - Sour Cream Carrot Cake

My mum used to make this cake when I was a kid, and it is so yummy. Especially with the 'cheesecake' icing. So quite a while ago, I copied this recipe from my mum's collection, and over the last couple of weeks, have made it a couple of times for my family, which they are loving :-)

Thought I'd share the goodness here too...

Sour Cream Carrot Cake

1 cup wholemeal SR flour
1 cup white plain flour
1 tsp Bicarb of Soda
2 tsp Cinnamon
2 tsp Nutmeg
1 cup white or raw sugar
1 cup vegetable or sunflower oil
4 eggs
1/2 cup Sour Cream
3 cups grated Carrot (about 4 carrots)

Sift flours, soda, cinnamon and nutmeg into large bowl.
Add sugar and oil, mix well.
Put eggs and sour cream into separate bowl, beat well.
Add to flour mixture, mix until smooth.
Add carrot, mix well.
Pour into 2 greased and lined loaf tins. (I usually make one big round cake instead, just needs to cook a little longer)
Bake at 180, centre of oven.
When cooked, stand a few minutes, turn onto wire rack to cool.
Top with cream cheese frosting.

Cream Cheese Icing

60g packet Cream Cheese
30g Butter
1 tsp grated Lemon Rind
1 1/2 cups Icing Sugar

Mix cheese, butter, lemon until smooth.
Gradually beat in sifted icing sugar.

Little Boy Dress Ups

Another fun week at kinder for Jude - he had two dress up days - yep..two!

Tuesday he went as Peter Pan...

And then on Wednesday he went as Carol from the movie/book "Where The Wild Things Are". Danielle rustled up this costume over a couple of days, made from scratch - isn't it crazy cool? Jude loves it!

Such a cutie :-)

Cupcake Cuteness

So I didn't make it to the Craft & Quilt Fair on Friday but this was the reason why - Alannah's Cupcake Party which was held on Saturday.

Ambitiously, I decided to sew a little apron for each little girl attending (10 including Alannah) and then went ahead and designed a not-so-simple apron to reproduce...stupid maybe, but it all looked very cute :-P

So this is what I'd been working on pretty much all last week, ignoring housework, cooking and other usual responsibilities..he he...fun!

Before & After - Kitchen Reno

So most of you who have been following my blog for the past couple of years, will know that we have been undertaking some major renovating, including an extension and rebuild on the existing cottage. We are still working away finishing off lots of little bits, and I hope to have more 'before & after' shots to share in the near future!

But the kitchen is pretty much finished now, so here is the before shot...

And the after shots....this first one is taken from the same spot as the 'before' photo..

My new friend, the dishwasher, is now installed, and really the only things left to do are properly install the kickboards and one more coat of paint on the bi-fold window frames.

And I picked up this funky tea towel from Yardage Design on etsy for the photos, and because who doesn't just love a new design-y tea towel every now and then...love it!

Yay! a finished room!

Thanks to DQ for taking some photos for me :-) (the last one is mine though :-P).

Oh, and a few notes...my kitchen is not always this tidy..he he....and it was styled up by me and Dan for these photos. I will make an effort to keep it this neat and lovely looking, but knowing my family, the benches wont remain this clutter-free for very long :-P

After some very positive feedback about my crochet beanie bands, I am putting them out there for an item that you can now purchase.

I've come up with a few more designs, and will be making each beanie band to order.

Check out this little jumpsuit she sent me for Levi, with hand-stitched detail and a great boys design. Also the jumpsuits she embellishes are super cosy, and of such nice stretchy fabric - so soft on little ones skin.

1,2,3...A Layout

Ok, so now you've picked yourself up off of the floor, I'll share :-P

I really wanted to create a layout of Levi, and then the 1,2,3 Challenge Blog re-launched and I thought why not have a shot at the June Challenge.

The new format over at the blog is very cool - it consists of one dominant colour, one word to use and one technique to try each month.

This month it was :
Colour : White
Word : New
Technique : Paint Smeared Background

So, here's my take on the challenge....photo by DQ

And here I used flocking powder to add texture, as well as some hand-stitching...

There is still a few days left to submit an entry if you feel like having a go. I must admit this was fun, fun, fun! I might even scrap some more very soon :-)

My little boy is not so little anymore - 5 years old now - unbelievable! School next year which is even crazier.

Here's a few things about Jude at 5 :
* Still loves all things Star Wars, Transformers, Lego and Robot-based
* Uses words like 'awesome' and 'cool' to describe things he likes
* Eats cornflakes or rice bubbles for breakfast everyday
* Loves playing with his big sister, and gets bored when she's not around
* Nearly every night when Roh gets home, he utters the words 'play something with me daddy'
* He can't sit still! Even at dinner time he's monkeying about on the chair, or while watching a movie he'll be climbing all over the couch...it's frustrating to watch, but also quite funny when you think about it.
* Loves having stories read to him
* Can count to 20
* Still sneaks into our bed most nights for snuggles
* Adores his new little brother, and loves to chat to him while he's having his nappy changed

Look how cheeky (and adorable and spunky..he he) they look...they'll be up to mischief together in no time, I'm sure!

My Creative Space..

I've had this softie idea in my head for a few weeks now for this monster..my sketch makes him look a little menacing, but he's not going to be - more like a big, goofy, friendly monster with a quirky grin...we'll see anyhow..

And I'm planning on making some little aprons and/or bakers hats for party pressies for Lana's friends who are coming to her cupcake party in July. I've just ordered the invites, and I think I really better get onto this otherwise I'll never get them done...

My Homemade Sausage Rolls

One of our more recent additions to the weekday lunches, are my homemade sausage rolls. The first batch I started using a Donna Hay recipe, but ended up changing and adding ingredients all over the place, so now the recipe is truly mine....and the family love them!

Ingredients :
1 kg mince
2 eggs
1 granny smith apple, grated
2 cups stuffing mix
1/3 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons tomato paste
salt and pepper
5 sheets of ready-rolled puff pastry
1 egg, lightly beaten, to brush onto pastry

How to :
1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees celsius.
2. Combine mince, eggs, apple, stuffing mix, soy sauce, tomato paste, salt and pepper.
3. Cut your pastry sheets in half. Do this as you go, so as not to waste extra pastry. Amount
used will vary depending on the size you make the individual sausages.
4. Roll your meat into a long sausage, and place on the long edge of the pastry. Make sure your
sausage goes end to end.
5. Roll pastry over the sausage, sealing and squishing the pastry edges together. Slice into four
equal portions.
6. Place on baking tray with pastry join sitting flat on the bottom of the sausage roll.
7. Continue repeating this until all mince mixture is finished.
8. Brush with the egg, and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden and cooked through.

Makes approximately 32-40 sausage rolls.

My Boys Baked Bread

So on Saturday night, Roh decided to give bread-making a go. It's been on my to-do list this last week, but I never quite got around to it, so Roh jumped in, with a little help from Jude. (above photo is a little out of focus - sorry! I'm going to blame the bad lighting..he he)

There is just something so yummy about bread fresh from the oven, especially on a cold winters night...mmmm

My Creative Space..

is a mess!

It started out innocent enough - I thought I'd do some scrapbooking (there is a layout in the photo..camouflaged a little maybe, but definitely there :-P). Then while sorting through some alphabets, I thought - why not have a big clean out, sort through, etcetera so that's what I've been doing, and will continue to do today. It's always good for the creative mojo to do some de-cluttering...well, I think so anyway..

And just a quick share of a couple of finished projects, from my 'unfinished projects' pile.

First up, some pj's for my nephew Bodie - in size 3. Now, I didn't actually make the top, but I did add the dinosaurs onto it. I started making these a couple of months ago, but got stalled when I was short of fabric. Feels good to get these done.

And next up is a granny square scarf, that I have given to Dan. It uses 12 granny squares, and is finished off with a single crochet edge. I really like the way this one turned out..so I might make another one someday....

Other than the above scrap layout, I've got a couple of crochet beanie bands to assemble and I'm halfway through a striped crochet scarf, which are my projects currently on the go. I also have to start getting into the plans for Alannah's cupcake party which is in late July, and have a huge sewing to-do list.

There's always something on the go....just the way I like it

Last night I stumbled across this fabric range...

It's called Circa 50 by Birch Fabrics, and I think it is awesome...I just love it! I can picture fun boy accessories - bunting, bags, cushions - especially with the rocket and car fabric designs.

It's nice to see something so completely original, don't you think?

Saturday Crafting

Yesterday the kids had some fun stamping with paint and apples and carrots - they found it hilarious at first, that you can use fruit and veg as stamps, but it didn't take them long to get into it.

As with most crafty type things, Jude only played along for a very short period of time, with a lot of random stamping, while Lana took the design from our craft book and spent a lot of time getting it right.

And while they played with paint, I started a new crochet project...

I'm in love with the colours I'm using, and its already 70% finished - yay! Will share when I'm all done.

Donna Hay Inspiration

In the Sunday Magazine, in our paper, Donna Hay shares recipes each week. This weeks recipes inspired me to bake something that very day..it just looked so yummy, and it was!

Here's the recipe for Orange & Poppyseed Loaf...

125g butter, softened
1/2 cup caster sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons poppy seeds
1 tablespoon finely grated orange rind
1/4 cup milk
1 cup self-raising flour, sifted

Orange Syrup
1 cup caster sugar
1/2 cup water
1 orange, thinly sliced

Preheat oven to 160/
Beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer until pale and creamy.
Gradually add the eggs and beat well.
Add the poppy seeds, orange rind,milk and flour.
Beat until just combined.
Spoon into a lightly greased 5 cup capacity loaf tine lined with non-stick baking paper.
Bake for 50 minutes or until cooked when tested with a skewer.
Turn out onto a wire rack to cool.

For the syrup, place the sugar and water in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat and stir until the sugar has dissolved.
Add the orange slices and cook for 10 minutes.
Allow to cool.

Top the loaf with orange slices and pour over the syrup to serve.
Serves 6 - 8.

Winter Warmers

With the coolness of winter now hitting us, nothing warms the belly like home-made soup and fresh bread rolls. I'm a big fan of pumpkin soup, but after a couple of batches, my family asked me to do a different variation of it. So I did a bit of googling, and stumbled upon this recipe :

Vanilla Pumpkin Soup

and it was very yummy! I have a bit of a soft spot for vanilla flavoured things (ie, fav drink - decaf vanilla latte) so this recipe really appealed to me.

So along with the soup, I also decided to give dinner rolls a go myself. And besides a couple of small errors on my part (sometimes multi-tasking is not my friend :-P) they turned out quite nice too - yay!
This week I also tried a slow cooker Chicken & Barley soup which my lovely friend Kate recommended, and that was fantastic. I'm really getting into the soup thing at the moment...can you tell?...he he

Frittata Goodness

Basic Frittata Mix :
6 eggs
1/2 cup cream
1/3 cup parmesan (or works just as well with colby)
2 cloves crushed garlic

Filling :
Potato (roasted)
Mushrooms
Bacon
Tomato
Basil

How to :

Prepare filling ingredients (roast potatoes, slice mushrooms & tomatoes).
Add potato, mushrooms & bacon to an oiled (olive) oven-proof frypan and cook.
Combine all frittata mix ingredients in a separate bowl/jug and whisk all together.
Add frittata mix to the other ingredients in the frypan, and heat on medium until almost set.
Lay tomato slices and basil leaves on the top and finish off under the grill, until golden.

Yum!

Whoops!

So, everything seemed to be going smoothly with our Saturday plans. The skip bin was being filled, food shopping was completed and the fire was going, burning off leftover bits of timber from our building work....until Roh needed to move his car, and his keys were nowhere to be found...the next hour or so consisted of frantic searching but to no avail.

Well, he found them Sunday morning, among the ashes of the fire...not looking too good or very useful, but at least he found them!

So other than the key distraction, the day went along fine. The kids had fun toasting marshmallows on the fire, although Jude declared he didn't like them getting black...in my mind, that's the best bit...but each to his own..lol

We enjoyed yummy baked potatoes for dinner layered with all the good stuff - bolognaise sauce, coleslaw, bacon, mushrooms, cheese, butter and sour cream - awesome & so tasty! I just love the wintery goodness of a fire cook-up.

Will be back tomorrow with a yummy recipe that's becoming a fast favourite in our house.

My Autumn Baby

6 Weeks

Time is flying by..can't believe Levi is 6 weeks already.

Here's where he's at :
* has started smiling and cooing
* is gaining weight and becoming quite a chub (gained 930g in 2 weeks!)
* loves bathtime
* has a strong neck and is constantly lifting his head to look around
* feeds well
* usually wakes 2-3 times a night
* is moving into 000 clothes
* has the snuffles at the moment

As for the rest of us, poor Jude has had a bout of Croup and a virus-cold thingy so was kept home from kinder this week, Lana has the snuffles too but feels fine so has been going to school. Roh and I are plodding along with work and life, a little sleep-deprived this week, but nothing we can't handle. We are starting to feel back on top of things now, so are starting back up with working on the house to get it finished - yay!

It starts with a big clean up this weekend - we have a skip bin coming tomorrow, and it will be lovely to have our courtyard and driveway free of building material waste. And I'll even be able to access the front garden which is in dire need of a weed and prune. The Orange Mexican Blossoms have just gone nuts!

We might even have a fire outside with coal-cooked baked potatoes for dinner...now that would be nice!

Cute Recipe Storage

So, as with any major renovation/building jobs, it's the little things that get left behind. Somehow painting, tiling, carpeting, fitting off, plumbing, lighting, etc is seen as more important than, say, recipe organisation or craft supply storage :-P....
ok, well I suppose it is..he he...
but I am really looking forward to sorting and organising cute storage options for our belongings.

I'm starting with this...
My lovely sis-in-law & bro-in-law got us this funky Kikki K Recipe Box for our wedding anniversary last year, and I just love it!
I'm slowly going through my recipe folders (you know the ones with loose pages that have been ripped out of magazines, never to be looked at again..) and writing all those favourite, easy and essential recipes onto these cards.

Such a cute way to store recipes, don't you think?

My Creative Space..

So I'm a little late with my space this week, my first week back since having Levi but I was determined to take part as I have got a couple of projects on the go.

I've been playing around with my crochet, and have started making flowers..I think they could become addictive! I have an idea in my head using these crocheted things, but will have to see whether the real thing lives up to the image in my head..

And I finally got my sewing machine out again. I have multiple projects cut out and ready to go, so I really need to get this machine pumping :-P

With this cold and rainy weather in Melbourne, it does make it a bit easier to stay inside, keeping warm and crafting/creating in various ways.

Levi's Corner

So this is Levi's little corner in our room. I finally put up the bunting today, and I must say, I quite like it....although I think it does need something on the green wall/right corner, just above the cot rail...maybe his name or a wall decal of some sort - what do you think?

These chest of drawers I re-vamped with some padding and complementing fabrics. My Dad put the handles back on the drawers for me...it needed a bit more elbow grease due to the padding :-P....Thanks Dad!!

And I made the bunting up in co-ordinating fabrics with the drawers (some the same, some new fabrics mixed in)

And finally the top of the drawers - I've popped my Wicket (An Ewok from Star Wars) on there along with a print from Sweet William that I love and purchased from one of last years Magnolia Square Markets, a rattle from Uncle Derek & Aunty Michelle and an essential - the baby monitor :-)

So I think if I just get that right hand corner sorted out, then I'll be happy!

Fabulous Felt

With a house of sickies over the last week, we've had a lot of inside time. And with inside time, comes time for creating - yay!

Here are a couple of felt projects made over the last week....

First up is a quick purse that I made for my sister Hayley as a temporary measure (she had her car broken into and her purse & bag stolen)...I think it turned out cute, and it fits her cash in it, which is most important, of course :-P

Then I made this little lion from the Nelly Pailloux book 'Felties' - it's for my nephew Caden, so I'll post it off this week, I hope...

And this is Pirate Mouse from the same craft book as the lion. This was a joint project with Alannah, for her cousin (my nephew) Ash who is completely pirate obsessed.

So there we have some fun felt projects, all quite quick to do too and quite easy (mostly) for little fingers.

Will be back soon with some pics of Levi's little corner with the revamped chest of drawers and bunting.

Here are 3 progressive shots of our stairs, which are pretty much finished now...

Will be getting back into the house reno work in the next week or so, to get a few more things finished off.

Have had a hectic week, with my parents & nan staying with us - being absolutely awesome doing the housework and ferrying the oldest two to kinder & school for me - and it couldn't have worked out better in the 'help' area because I came down with Mastitis and a head cold/flu thing, and mixing that with an unsettled & windy baby in the early hours of the morning made for a half awake/unwell me but with their help, things still ran smoothly - so a BIG Thank You to you all...love you lots xx

So hopefully, my blogging will be back on track this week. Have a couple of creative projects on the go, as well as some decorating to complete and share.

Fresh Air

As a last outing together as a family (4 generations - isn't that fantastic?!) for this Melbourne trip for my mum, dad, nan, sister and nephew, we headed to Sherbrooke Forest and 'The Falls' walk.

It was so beautiful and fresh, as it had been raining in the morning, and I definitely think we looked liked tourists, with quite a lot of cameras between the 8 of the adults :-P. But I do love that this is practically at 'the back door' of where we live...just have to remember to appreciate it a little more often..

From Blue to New

One of our projects over the Easter weekend, was to re-paint our room. As of last night, it's nearly there, but not quite...a little more enamel paint to go.

Here's the pics so far....

Plasterboard patch ups from old doorway and old window...

Covering the white with blue, for a balanced base...with the kids help, of course :-P

First coat on the exposed beams... (originally they were mission brown, then we painted them blue, now white)...

End wall now green...love it!

Just a few more touches to fix up maybe today...we'll see how the day pans out.

Have an important date at a local health facility in the late morning, so we may not get much more done :-P

Will be MIA for a few days, but will hopefully be back with an overwhelming amount of new family photos and an exciting introduction.

I finished Jude's pyjamas...

While Roh worked on our stairs...this is the first coat of the base stain...they should be finished tomorrow, so I'm told :-)

And I sewed these bunting flags together and ironed them flat, all ready to attach to the binding...

And I stitched this little pup to a singlet for Levi...

And Roh finished plastering the main wall in our bedroom...this will be where Levi's area will be set up. I think we are painting tomorrow..

And I also cooked up a batch of Monte Cream Biscuits...yum!

New Carpet

Must add a big THANK YOU! to those of you who posted (and told me) hints to sewing with stretch fabric - I'm almost finished Jude's pj top and it appears to be looking better. Out of your hints I've : changed the needle; used an overlock stitch for edging; used a specialised stretch fabric stitch for joining; and I've slowed down. So again, thank you friends.

Lana's New PJ's

Today I finished Lana's new pj's. The pants were done last week, and tonight I finished the matching top - Lana was quite excited, which was sweet. And they fit!! Yay!!

My little girl model got a little serious when I asked to take her pic...he he..

Now even though they fit, and look fine, I think I need to get some tips on sewing with stretchy
fabric...it's a little tricky to get it sitting flat and right...(Mum, Mum...are you there? lol)

Jude is now awaiting on his finished pj's...might get those tips first though!

My Creative Space

This week I thought I'd share a few of the projects I'm working on. I'm still going on the blanket-stitched vine on the knitted baby blanket, but I've a few more things on the go too...

I started this little ankle boot yesterday, for my adorable nephew Cedar, although when I measured his foot this morning, it's too small, so I will have to start again, with a bigger sized hook I think, because the wool is really thick...I'm new to crochet so any suggestions are always welcome :-P.

I've got a nice little collection of fabrics going, for a re-vamp of a timber chest of drawers for Levi, whose arrival date is getting close. I think this is on tomorrow's to-do list with my sis, DQ.

And yesterday, my lovely crafty friend Rach gave me two flannels, a baby bonds singlet and some Michael Miller cowboy fabric to play with for Levi, so I think some applique will be happening very soon...

Tripod Alien Dude

Today at our regular C.L.O.T.H get together, I finished off this little crochet arigurumi alien...he's a bit cute, I think...

He was taken from a free pattern at the Pepperberry blog. Mine turned out a little taller and skinnier, but I did use a bigger sized crochet hook than the pattern required, so maybe that's why...not sure...maybe my tension is tighter...any ideas?

There is washing to be done, little things to be folded and put away and a chest of drawers to be revamped.

There are some little boots to be crocheted....found and bought this new pattern from here, I just have to decide on a colour...hmmm

PJ Planning

Awesome : Making the kids pj pants, and they actually fit - yay!

I'm having a lot of fun with my sewing machine at the moment. I ran these pj pants up over the weekend, and I'm really happy with the results.

They both fit - yay! I cut Lana's out in a Size 7, and they are just long enough (a very small hem ;-P), and as the print on her fabric is pretty funky, we've just left them plain. Jude's are a size 4 and fit great, and due to just having stripes, he thought that some red cord stars would be cool. I think so too.

Now I've just got to get some tight knit t-shirt fabric, to make co-ordinating tops to go with them. Maybe at the end of the week.....

Identity Crisis

Well, maybe not a crisis, but a quirkiness, that's for sure. And no, not me, but my darling boy Jude.

It all started a few weeks ago, when he introduced himself, to a new child at the playground, as Luke Skywalker. Both Roh and I found this rather amusing (and still do), especially when this child runs up to Jude yelling 'Hey Luke, Luke' and receives a blank look from me for a moment before I twig. Kids are amusing, what can I say?
Well, he's added two more names to his A.K.A status - they are Ben10 (even though I think he's only seen the show maybe once!) and Anakin (yep, another Star Wars reference).

It's getting to quite a funny stage, where his kinder teacher tries to guess what name he is going by, each session he goes too, and I'm sure he finds this quite encouraging :-). I think this photo just sums it up....it's on the back of a paper plate jelly-fish that he made a couple of weeks ago at kinder ....What a crack up!

My Creative Space

I've decided to join in the fun over at the 'Kootoyoo' blog, and do a weekly 'my creative space' post.

This is a blanket for Levi - I've knitted it, and am now blanket stitching an 'Orla Kiely' inspired vine onto it, before I back it in flannel (the same fabric as the stem). It's taking a while, but I'm loving the hand-stitched edge, instead of using my machine. Cosier, I think.

Granny Square Project

So, I've decided to change my project for these granny squares - they were going to be a blanket, but I've become a bit bored with that idea...lol...so now I'm going to use them for the top of a floor cushion (think two european sized cushions squished together - mmm, comfy).

That being said, I have 12 and I need 25, so still have a little way to go, but so far, so good...

Going Cushion Crazy

Awesome : Getting some long overdue cushions made for our couch

So out of these 5 cushions, I made 4 of them (the orange with white vine cushion is flocked and shop bought). I mostly used the Saffron Craig fabrics I purchased a little while ago, with a bit of cord and cotton drill for the backs of the cushions.

I also used a screen print panel that I purchased last year at the Craft & Quilt Fair - the eye chart print on linen is by the talented Aunty Cookie.

I still want to make a couple more for the lounge, as well as a couple of floor cushions. And I'm really enjoying sewing at the moment, so I've got a bit of a list of things to create including clothes for the kids, bunting for Levi's corner, soft toys and probably some more things that I just cant think of at the moment :-P

Awesome : Progress on the Rumpus Room....we're getting there :-P

Over the long weekend, Roh, his Dad and his brother worked downstairs on our rumpus room, and managed to get all the plastering finished, including all the cornice up, which is a very yucky, icky, messy job. Roh has today off too, so is currently cutting in the ceiling white.

So things are happening...yay!

"It's Massive" said Jude

A storm cell ripped through Melbourne yesterday afternoon, causing flooding and damage in a wide-spread area. Jude kept saying "it's massive" through-out the storm yesterday, and being the little boy that he is, he couldn't help sticking his arm out of the window to feel the rain, even though he'd been asked to stay away from the windows. Just so curious.

We were fortunate, in that only our cars have suffered hail damage (Dad - we may need to book our cars in to see you next time we are in SA :-P...for once the dents aren't my fault...lol), and Roh's windscreen was cracked. Poor Dan & Ben had 4 of their house windows smashed, and 1 extra cracked, which is why I think we are fortunate.

This picture is at the bottom of our property - usually it's a running creek, but this picture shows it completely breaking it's banks...crazy stuff....it's back to normal this morning though.

Will be back later with some more creative projects. I'm in the process of doing those couch cushions on my to-do list.

Awesome : Sewing - making cute gifts

I've been sewing this week, both hand and machine, and have finished these two little things off.

This one is a Melly & Me pattern called "Phoebe", and she will be on her way to baby Noah very soon, I hope.

And here's another one out of the Nelly Pailloux 'Felties' book, which featured in an earlier post this week (I think!). This is 'Messenger Bear' - Alannah picked it out and then gave it to her cousin Sienna on Wednesday. Very little and very cute...

Now I should really get onto the 'must do' items on my sewing list such as throw cushions for the couch, and a bunting for Levi. Let's see how today pans out, hey?

A Farewell Flower Pot

Awesome : A red pot full of pretty flowers thriving....hope I can keep them alive! :-P

Monday was my last day of work, and the team gave me this gorgeous pot of flowers as a 'thank you/all the best' type of pressie.

At the moment it sits between my kitchen bench, and the servery shelf out of my kitchen window. They are still alive and it's four days and counting :-P

Mosquito Net - Take 2

Why 'take 2'?

Well, when we first opened this brand-new mosquito net for Alannah, as I shook it out, most of the flowers and leaves just fell off...it turns out they were only glued on, and not glued on very well, quite obviously :-P

I finally got around to hand-sewing all the flowers and leaves back on (thick felt wouldn't go through the machine, neither would the hoop they are stitched onto), we hung it in Alannah's room, and just the next day, Lana tugged on it too hard and the hanging tab ripped, and the whole thing came down.

Today, I sewed a new tab onto it, and re-hung it in her room.

Looks sweet. I wonder how long it will last this time.....?

Sunday Night Bake Up

Awesome : Doing a bulk lot of baking to last the week, for the family, with Roh

Sunday nights are our weekly food prep nights. Sometimes it's only a cake and fruit jelly, and other times it's like last night...

First up I made up the jelly (this week Green Apple flavour) and added half a tin of two fruits - pear and peach. The kids love it, and it's so much more economical than buying it already prepared...(about $2.00 for six serves vs $4.50 for 4 serves when pre-made). Another bonus is it's better for the environment, being sent to school in re-usable Tupperware, instead of disposable plastic tubs...:-P

And Roh made another batch of Coconut Jam Slice, which he just loves to eat, and make, which is great!

The Choc Chip Cookies were a joint effort - I started them, Roh finished combining all the ingredients, then Roh balled them up, while I topped off with the extra choc chips - yum!

And here's another family favourite - Nigella's Banana Bread. I made up two loaves of this, due to a bargain bag of bananas from the market. Exceptionally yummy with a swipe of butter.

And this one is actually a packet Chocolate cake, although I did make the icing from scratch. As you can see, it won't last long in this house!

In between these things, I also made up a slab of lasagne (3 meals worth for our family of 4) and Roh made up a bowl of Bruschetta mix, ready to go. Mmm, the smell of fresh basil is amazing.

Our Local Billy Cart Race Day

Awesome : Spending some time among our local community, watching the mostly home-made Billy Cart's race down our main street

This morning we headed to our little main street and met up with Nathan, Reeze, Bodie and Michael to watch the races.

Roh has a keen interest in the history of the Dandenong Ranges, especially Upwey, as he has lived here for over half his life, so when we saw the Historical Society set up with a stall, he became quickly involved in a chat with an elderly man, about the old roads, and where they used to go. He also just loves to look at the photos :-)

Lana, Jude and Bodie enjoyed watching the races, especially when Alannah saw a couple of her school mates race.

Isn't he cute? This is Jack, one of Alannah's school mates, in his first heat, about third race in.

I think the plan is for our family to enter a billy cart (or two, apparently) into next year's races...I've been told a Star Wars inspired Tie Fighter billy cart and a X-Wing billy cart, are the way to go....we'll see :-P

Joint Felties Project

Awesome : Spending time with Alannah, creating a little feltie dog

I picked up the above book from The Book Depository a while ago, and yesterday Lana and I sat down and picked out one to make. Lana picked the design, the fabrics and even cut out some of the pattern. I did the majority of the sewing, with Lana having a turn when the mood striked her..lol..oh to be a kid again! I think he turned out pretty cute...he only measures about 7cm in height, and apparently he is for Levi :-)

It was definitely a nice way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon.

A Bit More Paint

Awesome : Being able to see the end of the renovation with the nearly last (one colour to go!) paint purchase

So, I've just finished the first coat of the laundry ceiling. We've only got 4 rooms left to finish - Laundry, Ensuite (nearly all tiles), Rumpus and a refresh of our Master Bedroom. Sounds like a lot, but it's not really with two of those rooms quite small.

This green (Wattyl Nikau Palm) is the colour of the apexed wall in our bedroom, and where Levi will be set up with his cot and cupboards. I'm hoping to make a cute little bunting to hang near his cot - another thing on my to-do list :-P. I love the freshness of this colour.

And I picked up a sample pot of this orange (Dulux's Bright Delight) which we are considering for the rumpus room, mixed with two Iced Woods walls, following through with the colours from upstairs. It's actually nearly the same colour as the knitted throw I made. We'll see ...

So, needless to say, my daily activities will be fitting in quite a bit of painting, among our everyday commitments.

I've also started another little crochet critter - an owl this time. Hopefully I can share it in the next day or so.

So I'm pretty sure most of you know how Star Wars obsessed Jude is, following in his dad's footsteps of course, and definitely with his encouragement, so I am always on the lookout for Star Wars inspired creations/art/decor.

I found this very talented Etsy seller : Lucyravenscar Crochet Creatures : via flickr, who designed these little critters and I love them! I think I will definitely need to purchase at least one of these to try. Maybe the Ewok..I've always had a soft spot for Wicket :-P

Awesome : Laughing at my son, who's giving his sister attitude

So, quick story is :
Alannah was telling Jude to do something he didn't want to do.
As he walked away, she kept following him, hounding him.
So he turns around and says 'Oh Lana, blah blah' all full of attitude and turns back to what he was doing.
Me - I was laughing out loud - how could I not?

I think we'll be hearing this type of quote a lot from Jude, towards Alannah, as they grow up together.
